FEATURE STORY

Horror Manga Before VS Today

I love to read novel, but I also love to read Japanese comics or “Manga”, especially the shoujo and yaoi genre. But there are days when I got bored with shoujo and yaoi, that I seek different types of mangas. So, one day I decided to try the dark side of mangas or the Horror genre. I realized that there are not a lot of Horror mangas compared to shoujo, and only few are very good and interesting, but it did open my eyes for the great and classical horrors  that we can’t see most these days, especially with the current horror genre.

Corpse Party: Blood Covered
I am very, VERY disappointed with the current horror mangas today, especially to those authors that think, blood everywhere would be scary enough, and what the HELL is with the clothing of the characters these days? Is it scary to see high school students with their skirts almost non-existent? And come on, their breast? What’s up with those? So annoying. Here is a example:

This is the manga titled “Corpse Party” I have only read the first 2 chapters, but it’s about a group of friends who wanted to stay friends forever so they stayed at the end of school to tell ghost stories to scare themselves, after that, they tried this “Sachiko ever after” charm which would make their friendship bond go stronger, because apparently some of them are going to leave the group. Then an earthquake happened out of nowhere, and the group got divided and started looking for their missing friends. Apparently they are in a different dimension called “nirvana” where Heavenly Host still exists and is haunted by the ghosts of the school's murdered children. The students try to figure out the truth behind the mystery of the cursed school, in order to find their way home and try to survive the shadowy forces that haunt the school.

Let us tackle about the old and classical horror manga. I love them, they don’t need much blood or dialogue, the drawing itself is scary and creepy enough to make me not want to turn off the lights in my room. My favorite Horror manga are made by Junji Ito and the father of Horror manga, Umezu Kazuo. I really love their works. Here are their Best works:

uzumaki
Junji Ito's "Uzumaki" is about a curse town, hunted by the "spiral". In this story, some people get obssesed with anything related to spiral, or some weird things happened in a form of it. I love this manga, this is the first manga of Ito that I have read, at first, it was confusing, then disturbing, then brilliant. If you want to see people turning into snails, talking babies, blood-sucking pregnant women, people with holes on their faces, typhoon falling in love, a stalker zombie, then I recommend this manga to you!

God's left hand, Devils right hand

God's left hand, Devils right hand is one of the classics by Umezu Kazuo. It's about a boy named Shuu, who has supernatural abilities he uses to save his family and friends. What I like the most about this manga, is the thought of a child having the abilities of a god and a devil on either side of his body, the left hand with the ability to heal, and the right hand to banish evil. The manga is a little bit confusing at first, but mostly it's creepy, but what makes this manga special is that, you just can't stop reading it even though it's creepy and disturbing. If you don't believe me, you could try reading it yourself.
